A canoe is a type of boat that is lightweight which has a pointed design at both of its ends and it can be pushed by one or more paddles. There are actually two major types of canoe. The first type is known as the modern canoe which also known as the recreational canoe. This is the one that is open from one end to the other and usually it can be pushed by using a paddle which has one blade. There are also other types of canoes such as the dugout or pirogue.

Besides that, the fun fact is that the word “canoa” is recorded by Christopher Columbus as it is the word that is used by the West Indians to refer to their pirogue-looking boat. Originally, the oldest type of canoe is made up of thin frames of wood and some are also made up of whalebones that are wrapped with tight tree bark.

The birchbark canoes are first used by the people known as the Algonquin Indians. This type of canoes is used usually for transportation of goods, animal hunters, fishermen, as well as the fighters. The length of the canoe measures from 15 feet to 20 feet and this is the typical length of canoes that are found. The canoes that are used for the purpose of war measures from 20 feet to 100 feet and in some cases there are as many as 20 paddlers that are employed for the canoe.

The dugout canoe is used by the Indians in Africa, somewhere in the Pacific as well as in Canada. The modern canoes that are used for the purpose of recreation have a dimension of 15 feet to 20 feet in length and the breadth of about 34 inches while the depth of the canoe is from 12 inches to 14 inches. They are either made of wood, aluminum, or from artificial composite fiber.
